Obituary for Shirley Fickes (Miller)

Shirley Ann Fickes (Miller), age 88, of Camp Hill passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. Shirley was born February 12, 1933, in Altoona, PA, daughter of the late John and Vera (Jodon) Miller. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, dedicated mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. While attending Altoona High School, she met the love of her life, Ralph (Buddy), who she married in 1952. After marrying Ralph, they moved to Camp Hill to raise their family. Shirley was happy to be a stay-at-home Mom raising their children, David, Connie, Peter, and Danny, and sister Darlene. She was a devout Catholic and was an active member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church for over 60 years. Her love of children drew her to have a daycare in her home for 35+ years where she nurtured boys and girls often into high school. These children were an extended part of our family.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie and her husband, Gary Fritz of Cave Creek, AZ; son, Peter and his wife, Dottie of Mechanicsburg, PA; and son, Dan and his wife, Kaja of Hingham, MA; and sister Cherry Darlene and her husband, Phil Ringley, of Tool, TX. She also leaves four grandchildren, Elise and Kristi Fickes, Danielle Magnelli and husband, Lino, and Jen Payne; three great-grandchildren, Anna and Alex Magnelli and Jude O'Leary; and many heartbroken nieces and nephews.

Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ralph, brothers, Jack and Joe Miller, her sister-in-laws, Gerty and June Miller, and her firstborn son, David (age 5), and friends she held close to her heart.

Shirley's great loves in life were her family, her faith, taking care of her precious daycare children, Red Hats, camping, Myrtle Beach, any beach, music, Christmas, and attending Boston Pops concerts with family at Symphony Hall, and was famous for her homemade bread. She will always be in our hearts and celebrated in our lives.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday December 18, 2021, in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Camp Hill, with Rev. Neil Sullivan as celebrant. A visitation will be held in the church on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the mass. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery on Derry Street in Harrisburg, PA. Myers-Baker Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Memorial Fund, 3435 Trindle Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.

Our family wishes to thank the staff at The Woods at Cedar Run and Residential Hospice for the extraordinary care that she received while in their care.
