Obituary for Richard L. Gulden Sr.

Dr. Richard L. Gulden, Sr., 91, of Camp Hill, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
Born September 11, 1929 in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late Howard L. and Mary R. (Stover) Gulden.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Camp Hill and a proud graduate of Camp Hill High School Class of 1947. Following high school, he graduated from the PA College of Optometry and served in the US Air Force at Donaldson Air Force Base during the Korean War. After serving his country, Dick opened his Optometric practice in Camp Hill which he successfully ran for 40 years until his retirement in 1991.
Over his lifetime, Dick was active in many community and professional organizations. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, a former church council member and past council President. He was a member of the Camp Hill Lions Club for over 50 years, served as president and was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship. He was a life member of the Pennsylvania Optometric Society, the American Optometric Association, and Chapter President of the Optometric Centers of PA. He served as regional director of the Vision Conservation Institute and was Charter President of the Optometric Centers of PA.
Dick served on the Camp Hill Planning Commission and was a member of Camp Hill Horseshoe Pitching Club and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association. For many years he was an enthusiastic volunteer in the Camp Hill School District’s Outdoor Education Program. Dick was an avid golfer and was a former member of the Range End Golf Club.
“Doc” loved a good joke and had a repertoire of great stories. The dogs in his neighborhood will surely be missing his never-ending supply of dog treats.
Richard is survived by his son Richard L. Gulden, Jr., of Lemoyne, his daughter Gayle Diehl and husband Timothy, of Camp Hill, and his sister Dorothy Thompson and husband Richard, of Media, PA. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Scott, Makenzie and Olivia, his 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Shirley J. (Hochmiller) Gulden, his sister Kathryn Reinecker, and his brother Robert Gulden.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dick’s honor to the Camp Hill Lions Club, PO Box 663 Camp Hill 17011, or the Lion Foundation (Outdoor Education Fund) 2627 Chestnut Street
