Obituary for Odette Gertrude Hoffman (Kyler)

Odette Gertrude Hoffman, 96, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home, on Monday August 3, 2020. She suffered a massive stroke on July 24, 2020 and came home to spend time with her loving family and friends where she was surrounded with scripture readings, songs, prayers, and loving messages until the Lord took her home. She sorely missed this type of interaction the past four months due to the Covid-19 restrictions. While she wasn’t able to verbalize her appreciation, we were able to feel her squeeze our hands.
Born on August 20, 1923 in Akron, OH, she was the daughter of Everett James and Laura Blanch (Watson) Kyler.
Odette was a graduate of Kenmore High School in Akron, OH. Odette was a member of the West Shore Baptist Church and a former church Deaconess. She retired as office manager for Schleisner’s Women’s Clothing Store. She enjoyed playing card games, especially pinochle in her earlier years and due to macular degeneration was only able to play skip-bo golf with her friends and family. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake lots of yummy desserts. She also enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, and crocheting. She loved spending time with her family and always looked forward to our annual get-togethers at Longhill B&B in Winchester, VA. She particularly enjoyed the time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was able to babysit one grandson for several years, and they played lots of games together. Odette was an expert at “Word in a Word” at Country Meadows where she had lived since 2009. She loved listening to books provided by The Library for the Blind in Pittsburgh, PA.
Odette is survived by two daughters, Delores M. Sheffield and her husband Sam, of Mechanicsburg, and E. Lyne Blair and her husband Greg, of Rustburg, VA; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Gerald Wayne Hoffman (2015); a daughter, Carolyn Messimer; a grandson, David Messimer; and a brother, Woodrow Kyler.
Funeral services will be private, and burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill. Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Residential Hospice 100 Sterling Parkway, Suite 100, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050
